For instance, Massachusetts has adopted statutes and guidelines that address child-support. In these circumstances, courts will almost always follow the minimum support requirements set forth in the guidelines.

However, support guidelines, for example, are only a starting point. There are many situations in which a judge may order increased support beyond what is set forth in the guidelines. This may be the case if the paying parent is wealthy, or if the child or children that are the subject of the support payments have special needs, such as if they are suffering from a medical condition that requires additional care.
